Root Canals

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal procedure involves the removal of any decay, bacteria and nerves from a severely damaged tooth.

At Fort Richmond Dental Centre, our Winnipeg dentists use root canals to repair damaged teeth and restore their function.

Preserving Natural Teeth

If the nerves inside your tooth become infected or start to decay, our Winnipeg dentists will perform a root canal procedure to repair it and save your tooth.

Without a root canal, the root of a damaged tooth will die, requiring your dentist to extract it. Removing a tooth is not typically the best solution as it can cause other issues for your surrounding teeth.

When your dentist removes the decay and roots from the damaged tooth, they will then fill the space with a rubber-based material to seal it. The tooth will be covered with a dental crown to protect it. This restores the function of the tooth.

Signs You Need a Root Canal

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it may be a sign that you could need a root canal.

  • An abscess (or pimple) on the gums
  • Hot and cold sensitivity
  • Severe toothache pain
  • Swelling and/or tenderness

Visit your dentist to discuss your concerns. They will be able to diagnose the issue and determine if a root canal is required, or may recommend other treatment options.
